Dear President Clinton,

In regard to your June 5 scheduled fundraising appearance in Maine for current Governor John Baldacci:

As you might recall I had written to you previously noting your spectacular achievements and also providing a beginning outline in regard to why I feel that I am most skilled in regard to working with others to lift Maine successfully through the major difficulties in which it is and has been mired. Since that time I have placed as high as 3rd out of 17 candidates in independent non-scientific polling (http://bangornews.com/absolutepm/xlaapmview.asp?p=52&view=1 ) in the Maine Governor’s race for 2006.

As with many I love the State of Maine, but I have developed and put forth the most sophisticated and insightful solutions for Maine of any of the candidates, including the incumbent, and posses the skills required to bring them successfully to fruition.

I realize that campaigning for Democratic candidates nationwide is a regular component of what you have always done and would be expected to do and is nothing unusual. Your spouse, Hillary Clinton, has already appeared in Maine with Governor Baldacci in a similar capacity and most believe, strongly supported by polling, that she, if she is interested, is the clear frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for President in 2008.

To be frank, it is my individual perception that your still increasing legacy as one of the strongest and most revered icons of the 20th (and now 21st) century is not well served by stumping for a candidate that is not the best in his race and has, being kind, a mixed record at best in regard to productively serving one’s state in regard to results produced. Maine is, all things considered in regard to the stage upon which you serve, relatively small potatoes, but to the over one million people that live here it is our home and our future. I implore you, if I may be so bold, that before you add your considerable weight to the direction of our state that you take sufficient comparative study of the relative benefits of the two campaigns as well as others.

While I am not so politically immature as to believe that you are likely to change your plans, I do recognize that you are an individual who I believe is guided by a sense of both fairness and pragmatic benefit. Maine can and must do better than what has been achieved under the current administration, and I trust that your review of this mater would result in a similar conclusion.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Alex Hammer
